CMA CGM Group’s Chairman and CEO, Rodolphe Saadé, has announced a major step forward in France’s maritime industry with the addition of ten new 24,000 TEU container ships. These vessels, among the largest and most energy-efficient in the world, will sail under the French flag starting next year. The move not only reflects CMA CGM’s confidence in France’s maritime potential but also highlights its commitment to sustainable and low-carbon shipping.

Advancing France’s Maritime Leadership and Economy

CMA CGM’s decision to register these ten massive LNG-powered vessels under the French flag shows its dedication to enhancing France’s maritime competitiveness. The ships will operate under French laws, ensuring high safety standards and strong working conditions for seafarers.

Each ship will symbolize French excellence by carrying the name of iconic landmarks such as Notre Dame, Versailles, and Pont Neuf. This initiative will also create 135 new jobs for French seafarers trained at the French Maritime Academy (ENSM), strengthening human and economic ties within the nation’s blue economy.

Furthermore, the partnership with French and European suppliers like GTT and Bureau Veritas showcases the country’s technological expertise and industrial collaboration in shipbuilding.

Commitment to Sustainability and Innovation in Shipping

These vessels are designed with advanced LNG dual-fuel technology, making them compatible with biomethane and e-methane two low-carbon fuels capable of reducing CO₂ emissions by up to 85%. They will also cut down pollutants such as sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides, aligning with global environmental goals.

By deploying these ships on the French Asia Line (FAL 1) connecting Europe to Asia, CMA CGM aims to improve fuel efficiency, reduce carbon intensity, and support greener global trade. This demonstrates the company’s leadership in shaping a sustainable future for maritime transport.

CMA CGM’s new fleet marks a defining moment for France’s maritime resurgence uniting national pride, sustainability, and innovation. Through eco-friendly technology, local employment, and international trade connections, these vessels will not only carry goods but also symbolize France’s enduring influence in the global shipping industry.
