CMA CGM Takes Delivery of Methanol-Powered 13,000 TEU Container Ship

  • CMA CGM Argon, a 13,000 TEU vessel powered by methanol, was delivered by HD Hyundai Samho on May 15.
  • The new ship cuts SOₓ emissions by 99%, NOₓ by 80%, and CO₂ by 25% compared to conventional fuel.
  • This unit is the second in a 12‑strong series named after elements in the periodic table, with the remaining vessels arriving through 2026.

On May 15, CMA CGM formally took possession of the Malta-flagged Argon at HD Hyundai Samho’s shipyard. Executives from both the shipping line and the shipbuilder attended the handover event, marking the latest milestone in CMA CGM’s strategy to expand its green fleet.

Vessel Design and Green Propulsion

Measuring 335 m in length and 51 m in beam, the Argon belongs to CMA CGM’s methanol-powered 13,000 TEU class. By burning clean methanol, the vessel achieves dramatic emissions reductions: sulfur oxides fall by 99%, nitrogen oxides by 80%, and carbon emissions by 25% relative to traditional marine fuels. This dual‑fuel design ensures compliance with future environmental regulations and underscores CMA CGM’s commitment to decarbonisation.

Series Order and Upcoming Deliveries

The Argon is the second delivery under a February 2023 order worth KRW 2.52 trillion (about $2 billion) for twelve methanol‑capable ships at HD Hyundai. The first, CMA CGM Iron, entered service on the Asia–Middle East Gulf route in March. The remaining vessels—each bearing a name drawn from Mendeleev’s periodic table—will join the fleet throughout 2025 and 2026, further strengthening CMA CGM’s environmentally advanced tonnage.
