CMA CGM Takes Delivery Of One Of The World’s Largest Dual-Fuel Container Ships

9

The CMA CGM Group marked a significant milestone in sustainable maritime transport with the delivery of CMA CGM Saint Germain, one of the world’s largest dual-fuel container vessels. Built by China’s Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, the vessel is the second in a new series of four ships, each capable of carrying 24,000 TEUs.

Designed with advanced LNG propulsion and smart technologies, Saint Germain represents a major step forward in reducing emissions, improving operational efficiency, and reinforcing CMA CGM’s leadership in green shipping innovation.

Massive Dual-Fuel Vessel with Unprecedented Range

The CMA CGM Saint Germain, delivered on June 6, is the second of four ultra-large container ships for the French CMA CGM Group. Classified by Bureau Veritas, it features dimensions of 399 metres in length and 61.3 metres in beam, with a draught of 14.5 metres. The 24,000 TEU capacity, including 2,200 refrigerated container slots, makes it one of the largest LNG-capable vessels in the world.

The ship is powered by a WinGD W12X92DF-2.0 dual-fuel engine, supported by 18,600 cbm of LNG storage in GTT Mark III membrane tanks. When running exclusively on LNG, the ship can travel up to 20,000 nautical miles without refueling — a major advantage in long-haul efficiency and emission reduction.

Enhanced Safety and Smart Port Operations

To ensure structural safety and durability, especially concerning sloshing effects in large LNG tanks, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were used to model pressure conditions. The data was then applied in strength checks for both the cargo containment system and the hull support structure.

Additionally, the vessel is outfitted with an intelligent monitoring system and automated berthing control, which enables precision docking and minimizes berthing time. These smart features contribute to faster port turnaround and improved operational reliability.
