The container vessel CMA CGM ZEPHYR recently transited the Suez Canal’s southern convoy on its journey from Singapore to Alexandria. This voyage marks the tenth container ship to benefit from a new incentive scheme introduced by the Suez Canal Authority (SCA). The ship, flying the Maltese flag, measures 366 meters in length, 51 meters in width, and has a draft of 53 feet, with a gross tonnage of 164,000 tons. It was carrying 11,800 TEUs of cargo.
The transit was made possible under a newly introduced circular that offers a 15% discount for three months to container vessels with a net tonnage exceeding 130,000 tons, regardless of whether they are laden or in ballast. The incentive is part of a broader strategy by the SCA to maintain competitiveness and support steady traffic flow amid ongoing tensions affecting Red Sea navigation.
Initial results from the program have been encouraging, with six voyages from CMA CGM and four from MSC taking advantage of the discount since the initiative began. The SCA has reaffirmed its commitment to providing safe navigation and flexible pricing to attract more global shipping lines to its route.
