Maritime freight and logistics provider CMA CGM says it has doubled the number of female seafarers working on its vessels, one year after launching a recruitment program for women called “She Sails,” reports gCaptain.
The program has enabled CMA CGM to double the number of women seafarers within its fleet, rising from 200 to 403. In reaction, the company is raising its hiring targets and now aims to have 1,000 women at sea by the end of 2030.

While notable for that percentage increase, the number of women working at the company still represents a small portion of the total of 13,000 crew members currently serving aboard CMA CGM-owned ships.
Marseille, France-based CMA CGM says the “feminization” initiative has helped to accelerate women’s careers across the fleet, notably through the mobilization of a network of 42 ambassadors in 19 countries and through new partnerships with maritime academies. The company has also signed agreements to strengthen the recruitment of cadets, including one in Abu Dhabi and two in India, with two more being prepared in the Philippines and Indonesia.
CMA CGM also says it is working to promote career progression for women, shown in 74 promotions recorded this year, including 8 to senior officer positions on board (the four highest levels of responsibility), 48 from cadet to junior officer, and one from deckhand to qualified deckhand.
“In just one year, our program has proven its effectiveness: the results exceed our expectations,” Christine Cabau Woehrel, the Group’s Executive Vice President in charge of Operations and Assets, said in a release. “More women are accessing key positions, their career paths are accelerating, their confidence is growing, and our teams are gaining in both diversity and performance. These achievements are a source of pride, but above all a responsibility: to continue our efforts, to go further, and to make equal opportunities a lasting reality across all our teams.”
