CO2 Leak in Engine Room Kills 3 Crew

At 16:30 on September 27,Panama-flagged Ro-Ro ship “SANG SHIN” leaked carbon dioxide at the terminal of a shipyard in Changtu, Daishan. The incident caused 3 deaths and 2 people are still under treatment, reports Maritime Bulletin.

Carbon dioxide gas leakage

According to the report of Daishan Emergency Management Bureau, the shipowner carried out the fire alarm system inspection on its own according to the requirements of the ship’s classification society before sailing.

Due to the foreign crew’s operating errors during the inspection, the carbon dioxide gas in the engine room leaked. The details of the accident are under further investigation.

According to AIS, the ship departed from the port of Aqaba port in Jordan on August 13 and arrived at Changtu Island in Zhoushan on September 18.

Car carrier SANG SHIN, IMO 9073701, GT 50308, built 1994, flag Panama, manager DORIKO LTD., Seoul (since May 2021 – EQUASIS). The owner of the ship is NIPPON YUSEN KAISHA (NYK).
