On July 30, a barge loaded with coal submerged in the waters of Aceh Besar district after it was slammed by rough waves.

What happened?

The barge ‘TB Marina’ loaded with 7,000 tons of coal was enroute PT Lafarge Cement Indonesia in Lhoknga subdistrict when it reportedly sank in the waters of Aceh Besar district.

The vessel was battered by rough waves with few consignment of coal falling into the sea and the ship sank right when it started to lean on the dock of the company.

Investigation initiated

An investigation has been initiated to look into the incident and fortunately none of the crew members onboard the vessel were injured during the incident.

However, many sea creatures such as fish, crabs, starfish, and eels were found dead on the coastal beach and between the coals that were stranded.

The Coalition of Aceh Marine Advocacy (KUALA) has urged the company’s responsibility in light of the coal spill. Mr.Rahmi Fajri, KUALA secretary said, “We demand the ship’s owner recover and clear the coal materials [in the waters]”.
