  • Coast Guard to invest nearly $350 million in robotics and autonomous systems under OBBBA.
  • FY 2025 allocation includes $11 million for immediate upgrades to unmanned technologies.
  • New ROVs, UGVs, and SR-UAS will boost safety, efficiency, and mission reach.
  • Investment supports Force Design 2028 to build a more agile and responsive Coast Guard.

The U.S. Coast Guard has announced a nearly $350 million investment to expand robotics and autonomous systems, a move aimed at enhancing mission performance and strengthening operational readiness. The funding, provided under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), underscores the service’s commitment to advancing technology for greater safety and efficiency, according to United States Coast Guard News.

As part of this investment, $11 million in fiscal year 2025 has been allocated for immediate upgrades to key autonomous technologies. Initial procurements include 16 VideoRay Defender remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) for Deployable Specialized Forces, six Qinetiq Squad Packable Utility Robots (SPUR) and 12 mini-SPURs for Strike Teams, and 125 SkyDio X10D short-range unmanned aircraft systems (SR-UAS).

These systems will support a wide range of operations, from hull inspections, disaster response, and search and rescue missions to hazardous materials response and environmental surveys. By reducing reliance on divers and enabling safe access to confined spaces, the new technologies will improve both efficiency and personnel safety. The initiative forms part of the Coast Guard’s Force Design 2028 plan, which focuses on integrating advanced capabilities and creating a more agile, capable, and responsive service.
