On July 14, a cargo ship carrying iron ore was flooded off Mumbai coast, leaving the front portion of the vessel partially submerged.

Captain Ashok Corrol of the mini bulk carrier, MV Kumar radioed Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre for help.  The ship was not equipped with sufficient damage control equipment and would have capsized had help not arrived in time.

A Coast Guard Helicopter, carrying de-flooding pumps, arrived at the scene to assist in rescue operations.  All crew members are reportedly safe and there is no extensive damage to the ship.

Following the near mishap, Coast Guard reiterated the importance of preparing ahead for such eventualities during monsoon.  It asked all ships masters and to stock essential damage control equipment to mitigate such challenges at sea.
