Cochin Shipyard and Svitzer Sign Agreement to Build Next-Generation Electric TRAnsverse Tugs

Svitzer and Cochin Shipyard Limited announced a new shipbuilding agreement on 8 December 2025. The contract covers four 26-metre electric TRAnsverse tugs that will be built in India for Svitzer’s global fleet programme. The announcement was made in Cochin and Copenhagen.

Agreement Builds on Earlier Intent

The deal confirms a Letter of Intent signed in October 2025 during India Maritime Week. It also moves the partnership from initial planning into a formal newbuilding programme.

Under the agreement, CSL will construct at least four battery-electric TRAnsverse 2600e tugs. Additionally, Svitzer holds an option for up to four more vessels. CSL will build the units to Svitzer’s specifications at its Cochin facilities. Meanwhile, the vessels will support fleet renewal and future deployment across global ports and terminals.

Technology and Design Features

The TRAnsverse 2600e is the electric version of Svitzer’s next-generation tug design. The model is known for operating safely in close-quarter conditions and handling a wide range of ship types and sizes. The vessels will use battery-electric propulsion. When charged from green power sources, they will produce zero direct emissions during port operations.

Furthermore, the design includes a patented staple, a double-ended hull, and in-line propulsion with omnidirectional thrust. These features widen the operating envelope in towage by up to 50%.

Statements from Svitzer and Cochin Shipyard

Svitzer’s Chief Operating Officer highlighted the company’s commitment to manufacturing in India and supporting the transition toward lower-emission towage. He noted India’s strong shipbuilding skills and the value of collaborating with CSL on advanced tug construction.

The CMD of CSL stated that the agreement marks a natural expansion of the shipyard’s capabilities. He emphasised the role of the programme in building expertise in electric propulsion, manoeuvring systems, and integrated digital solutions. He also noted the opportunities the project creates for engineers, designers, and the wider local supply chain.

Construction Timeline

The first four vessels are scheduled to begin construction in the coming months. The initial delivery is expected no earlier than late 2027 or early 2028. Additional vessels may be built in line with Svitzer’s renewal plans and customer requirements.
