Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) achieved a major milestone by launching three advanced vessels on 18 October 2025, demonstrating India’s growing capabilities in diverse maritime sectors, including naval defence, renewable energy support, and port infrastructure.
Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC)
INS Magdala
- Sixth vessel in an eight-ship series for the Indian Navy.
- Replaces the Indian Navy’s ageing Abhay-class corvettes.
- Key features: 78 metres long, 896 tonnes displacement, top speed of 25 knots.
- Armament/Sensors: Advanced underwater sensors, anti-submarine rockets, lightweight torpedoes, and mine-laying capability.
- Missions: Low-intensity maritime operations, coordinated anti-submarine missions with aircraft, and search and rescue in coastal waters.
- Enhances near-shore anti-submarine capabilities with improved automation, manoeuvrability, and endurance.
Hybrid Electric Methanol-Ready Commissioning Service Operation Vessel
India’s First Offshore Renewable Energy Vessel
- Developed in collaboration with Norwegian firm Kongsberg Maritime.
- Dimensions: 93 metres long and 19.6 metres wide.
- Purpose: Designed to support the commissioning, installation, and maintenance of offshore wind turbines.
- Technology: Hybrid-electric propulsion, methanol-ready engines, large lithium-ion batteries, Dynamic Positioning (DP2), and a motion-compensated gangway.
- Additional Role: Intended to serve as a “floating hotel” for offshore technicians, offering world-class comfort and safety.
Trailer Suction Hopper Dredger (TSHD)
DCI Dredge Godavari
- India’s largest and most advanced dredger.
- Developed jointly with Dutch company Royal IHC.
- Specifications: 127 metres in length, capable of dredging up to 36 metres deep.
- Capacity: 12,000-cubic-metre trailer suction hopper.
- Impact: Expected to significantly enhance India’s port deepening, land reclamation, and maintenance dredging capabilities.
Strategic Importance
- The triple launch showcases India’s engineering skills, focus on local manufacturing, and commitment to sustainable growth.
- It aligns with the goals of Maritime India Vision 2030 and Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India).
- The launch took place ahead of India Maritime Week 2025, starting on 27 October in Mumbai.
