Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has marked a major milestone with the keel laying of a cutting-edge hybrid electric Service Operation Vessel (SOV) for North Star Shipping, UK. Designed to support offshore wind operations, the vessel represents a new step in India’s contribution to the global renewable energy supply chain.
A Major Step in Offshore Renewable Vessel Development
The keel-laying ceremony was conducted by Michael Reid, Head of Special Projects at North Star Shipping, in the presence of senior CSL officials including Director (Operations) Dr. Harikrishnan S and Director (Technical) Rajesh Gopalakrishnan.
The 85-metre battery-electric hybrid SOV is the second of two vessels that CSL is building for North Star Shipping, a key player in offshore renewable support vessels. Designed in collaboration with Norway’s VARD AS, the VARD 4 19 SOV will be classed by DNV and is equipped with lithium-ion battery systems, DC-based power distribution, electric azimuth propulsion, and an advanced walk-to-work gangway for efficient offshore transfers.
Designed for Efficiency, Safety, and Offshore Wind Operations
Built specifically for the demanding needs of offshore wind farms, the vessel integrates accommodation, logistics, and maintenance functions into one modern platform. Key onboard capabilities include:
-
Battery Hybrid Power Management System
-
DP2 Dynamic Positioning Class
-
Accommodation for 80 persons, including technicians and crew, aligned with DNV C2-V2 comfort standards
-
Dedicated wind turbine maintenance areas
-
Integrated warehouse and logistics centre for streamlined operations
-
Advanced walk-to-work system enabling safe personnel transfers at sea
Once operational, the SOV will significantly enhance service efficiency, maintenance operations, and working conditions in offshore wind environments.
The keel laying marks a new chapter in the partnership between Cochin Shipyard Limited and North Star Shipping. With its advanced hybrid technology and specialised offshore features, the new SOV underscores the shared commitment of both companies to innovation, sustainability, and the future of renewable energy operations.
