Cochin Shipyard Ltd. Orders For The First Emission-Free Feeder Container Vessel

Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL), Cochin, the top shipbuilder in India, was awarded a significant international order for the design and construction of two zero-emission feeder container boats with an option for two further vessels from M/s. Samskip Group, Norway. One of the world’s first zero-emission feed container vessels, the project will ultimately run on green hydrogen and hydrogen fuel cells.

Green funding programme

This is a large-scale initiative funded by the Norwegian government’s green funding programme that aims to develop emission-free transportation methods through the adoption of cutting-edge, sustainable technologies. The project will cost roughly 550 crores of Indian rupees. These ships, which can accommodate about 365 high-cube containers each of 45 feet, are designed to service the European market, which has a high demand for environmentally friendly transportation options.

Each vessel is anticipated to reduce CO2 emissions by about 25,000 tonnes annually while operating in zero-emission mode. By utilising green shore power at the port of call, they will accomplish zero-emission operations in ports as well. Deliveries of the vessel are expected to begin in Q3 2025.

Emission reduction solution 

For greater endurance, the vessels have a hybrid power system with hydrogen fuel cells and a diesel generator backup. It will be equipped with azimuth thrusters for high manoeuvrability and a facility on board for storing hydrogen fuel for driving. For the European renewable offshore wind farm market, CSL has also recently won contracts for the construction of 2 Nos. Commissioning Service Operation Vessels (CSOV). These vessels also use methanol-fueled generators and massive Li-ion batteries as emission-reduction solutions.

For two decades, CSL has been involved in the global shipbuilding industry (having exported high-end vessels to countries such as Norway, the USA, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark and the Middle East).

In addition to its recent construction and delivery of Zero Emission Autonomous Cargo Ferries to European clients, CSL’s extensive experience and track record in the construction of several high-end offshore support vessels to West Europe has positioned it as the yard of choice for various customers looking for such solutions.

INS Vikrant, India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier, was recently delivered by the yard, which is also active in the defence shipbuilding sector and producing eight anti-submarine shallow watercraft for the Indian Navy. With this purchase, CSL has improved its standing as one of the world’s pioneers in the development of cutting-edge green sustainable technologies for the shipping industry.
