Collision in Volkerak

The Netherlands flagged cargo ship “Zembla” reportedly met with an accident in Volkerak around 10:15 pm on March 19, 2018.

What happened?

The vessel had sailed from Dusseldorf at 11 am and was making its way through the Volkerak Locks when it collided with the “Merelbeke”, in the evening of March 19, 2018, at 10.15 p.m.

The Damages

The damage was considerable. The bow of the “Zembla” suffered a large leak in the waterline and the hull of the “Merelbeke” was breached.

Patrol Boat To Assistance

Rijkswaterstaat was notified after the accident and attended the situation with the patrol boat “RWS 73” which assisted to keep hindrance for the ship traffic limited. The “Zembla” was finally berthed in the Antwerp on March 20 at 6.20 a.m following the rescue operation, reports the Dutch newspaper Schuttevaer.
