Stricter restrictions at Yantian Port

Maersk announced on the evening of May 31 that the Yantian Port’s epidemic prevention measures have become stricter, the density of the terminal yard has continued to increase, and the operation in the west area has not been restored.

The production efficiency in the east area is only 30% of the normal level. It is expected that the terminal will continue to be congested in the next week and ships will be delayed. Extend to 7-8 days.

The transfer of a large number of ships and cargo to surrounding ports has also aggravated the congestion of surrounding ports.

Empty container delays

Maersk also mentioned that truck services entering Yantian Port to transport containers are also affected by traffic congestion around the terminal, and it is expected that empty trucks will be delayed by at least 8 hours.

Prior to this, due to the outbreak of the epidemic, Yantian Port closed some terminals in the west area and suspended the export of containerized goods. The backlog of goods exceeded 20,000 boxes.

According to Lloyd’s List Intelligence ship tracking data, a large number of container ships are now congested near the Yantian port area. Linerlytica analyst Hua Joo Tan said that the port congestion problem will still take one to two weeks to be resolved.

More importantly, freight rates that have soared may “rise again.” The number of TEUs from the starting port of Yantian, China to all U.S. ports (the white dotted line indicates the TEU in the next 7 days.

Companies issue notices of port jump

According to a report in the Securities Times, nearly 90% of Shenzhen’s exports to the United States and Europe originate from Yantian, and about 100 air routes are affected. This will also have a knock-on effect on exports from Europe to North America.

Note to freight forwarders who have plans to ship from Yantian Port in the near future: pay attention to the dynamics of the terminal in time and cooperate with the relevant arrangements after the gate is opened.

1. Hapag-Lloyd changes the port of call

Hapag-Lloyd will temporarily change the call at Yantian Port on the Far East-Northern Europe Loop FE2/3 to Nansha Container Terminal. The voyages are as follows:

  • Far East Loop 2 (FE2): voy 015W AL ZUBARA, voy 013W MOL TREASURE
  • Far East Loop 3 (FE3): voy 001W HMM RAON

2. Notice of Maersk’s port jump

Maersk believes that the terminal will continue to be congested in the next week, and ships will be delayed for 7-8 days. In order to restore the reliability of the shipping schedule, several Maersk ships will have to hop to Yantian Port.

In view of the fact that the truck service at Yantian Port is also affected by terminal congestion, Maersk estimates that the empty container pickup time will be delayed by at least 8 hours.
