Container Ship Runs Aground Due to Strong Winds
A container ship reportedly ran aground off the coast of Denmark due to strong winds.
What happened?
The container ship Victoria ran aground in Samso Belt west off Kalundborg, Denmark. The vessel was en route from Antwerp to Fredericia, but due to strong winds the container ship started drifting outside the fairway and ran aground near the Samso Island.
The crew on board were able to prevent hard grounding by reversing the engine and refloated the vessel by its own power.
However, the local authorities detained the container ship for survey and ordered the ship to be anchored near the grounding site.
Lookout for oil spill:
There were uncertainties about oil leak and damage to the fuel tank when it ran aground, but the divers were not able to make an underwater inspection due to the bad weather.
Danish Home Guard’s surveillance aircraft and an Air Force helicopter were sent to the grounding site several times to monitor for oil leaks, but there were no signs of water pollution.
Investigation launched:
The local authorities have started an investigation for determining the root cause of the grounding. There were no reports about engine failure or other technical problems of the vessel, so probably the grounding happened due to strong current and bad weather.
However, the authorities will follow a special survey and underwater inspection before releasing the container carrier to return in service.
