Container Ship Collides With Berthed Greek Bulk Carrier in the Yangtze River

Container Ship YU HANG 18 went out of control while passing Zhenjiang, Yangtze River, upstream from Shanghai and collided with berthed bulk carrier ODIGITRIA, reports ARX Maritime.

What happened?

Chinese Container Ship, YU HANG 18 collided with the Marshall-Islands flagged Bulk Carrier, ODIGITRIA, in the evening of July the 6th, while transiting through Yangtze, River, China, at approximately 18:00, LT near Zhenjiang.

The YU HANG 18 had been carrying 160 containers at the time, charged with transporting them from Nantong to Nanjing.

Unfortunately, the vessel lost control due to the adverse weather conditions present in the area and proceeded to crash against the ODIGITRIA, that had been moored at the No.2 berth of a nearby power plant.

Any damage or pollution reported?

During the collision, the port side bow of the YU HANG 18 struck the bow of the ODIGITRIA. As a result, 7 containers fell overboard into the river.

Both vessels sustained damage to their hulls in the process, however, the exact nature of the damage is unknown at this time. ODIGITRIA suffered damages to its starboard side.

There was no report of pollution or injury as a result of the collision. Local maritime safety authorities have sent a team to salvage the lost containers while diverting traffic through the nearby waterways.

Investigation launched

The local authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the incident. Initial reports, suggest that strong river currents and high winds are to be blamed.
