Container Ship Hits Rock-like Structure! Runs Aground!

A container ship ran aground near mile marker 81 of the Mississippi River, reports U.S.News.

What happened?

Watch standers at USCG Sector New Orleans received a call at 3:20 a.m. that the Liberian-flagged container ship ‘Belita’ ran aground near 12-mile point, at mile marker 81 of the Mississippi River.

According to the US Coast Guard the containership hit a rock-like structure along the shoreline called a riprap in the early morning hours of Friday.

Investigation underway

The reason for the accident remains under investigation. Petty Officer Lexie Preston said the grounded ship was back underway as of 3 p.m. Friday.

Preston said no injuries or signs of pollution were reported.

Traffic restrictions

Sector New Orleans vessel traffic service has placed a one-way traffic restriction in the immediate vicinity of the grounded vessel.

The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed Saturday that the traffic restrictions on the Mississippi River have been lifted after the container ship was back underway.
