Container Ship Towed to Safety After Engine Failure Near Punta Melenara

12

A Portugal-registered container vessel, experienced an engine failure. The incident occurred while the ship was navigating approximately eight nautical miles east-northeast of Punta Melenara, which is located in Spain. This engine failure would likely necessitate repairs and could cause delays to the vessel’s intended schedule, reports Maritime Bell.

Swift Action

A container vessel, carrying a cargo that included hazardous materials, experienced an incident that caused it to begin drifting southward at approximately two knots. The challenging situation was compounded by adverse sea conditions, characterized by winds from the northeast blowing at 25–30 knots and waves reaching heights of up to two meters.

Responding promptly to the emergency, Spain’s maritime rescue agency, Salvamento Marítimo, dispatched the tugboat Heroínas de Sálvora. The tug successfully reached the drifting vessel, secured a towline, and safely towed the vessel to the Port of Las Palmas for thorough inspection and evaluation of its condition.

Following the necessary clearance procedures, the vessel was able to resume its voyage on April 21st and is now expected to arrive at its next scheduled destination, Nouakchott in Mauritania, by April 23rd. The swift action of Salvamento Marítimo and the safe towing operation prevented a potentially more serious situation given the vessel’s cargo and the rough sea conditions.
