A recently launched container vessel collided with a quay and another ship at a major Estonian port on September 8. The incident caused structural damage to the pier and left one bulker vessel with a damaged bow. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Collision Details
The accident happened around midday as the vessel was arriving from Finland. Local media reports highlighted that the ship’s bow cut several meters into the wharf, breaking off a significant section of the port structure. Another vessel positioned nearby also sustained visible bow damage during the incident. Shortly afterward, navigation records indicated the vessel was briefly marked as “aground,” while its tracking system remained inactive for nearly three hours before resuming later in the day.
Investigation and Vessel Background
Port authorities quickly reached out to the crew and have begun investigating the circumstances of the collision. The container vessel involved is a new, environmentally friendly feeder ship launched earlier this year. Built in South Korea, it measures over 200 meters in length, can carry around 2,000 containers, and is powered by liquefied natural gas to reduce carbon emissions.
While no injuries occurred, the collision resulted in significant structural and vessel damage, sparking an official inquiry. The event underscores the risks faced in port operations, even as modern ships are designed for greater safety and efficiency.
