Containership Contacted Lock Wall in Kiel Canal

Container ship contacted Lock’s central wall in Brunsbuettel while entering Lock for northbound transit, reports Maritime Bulletin. 

What happened?

Container ship WYBELSUM contacted Lock’s central wall in Brunsbuettel in the evening Sep 15, while entering Lock for northbound transit in Kiel canal.

The vessel en route from Hamburg to St Petersburg proceeded to enter Kiel Canal’s lock with higher than recommended speed, causing collision with the wall construction.  

Damages reported

It is reported that the ship’s port side stern damaged the wall. But both Lock’s and ship’s damages were not serious. 

Transit and voyage resumed

  • WYBELSUM was allowed to resume her transit soon after the accident. 
  • She completed transit by 0000 UTC Sep 16.
  • She continued her voyage from Rotterdam to ST-Petersburg, Russia. 
  • Lock remained operational.
