Containership Loses Suffers Major Cargo Loss Near Canary Islands

7

A Singapore-flagged containership reported a major cargo loss after encountering severe weather south of the Canary Islands off Maspalomas. The vessel lost approximately 45 containers, while several containers were crushed under the weight of toppling stacks, reports Marine Traffic.

The incident occurred while the vessel was carrying more than 16,000 empty containers en route from Le Havre to Singapore. The captain observed multiple container stacks leaning dangerously to starboard and declared an emergency. The vessel temporarily halted its voyage and diverted towards Las Palmas Port, Spain arriving on 10 December.

Initial assessment revealed that ten rows of containers at the stern had collapsed due to powerful waves. At the shipowner’s request, authorities conducted an aerial drone inspection to assess the damage across the vessel and the containers.

On 11 December, a complex cargo recovery operation commenced, and a team of 8 specialised personnel were deployed to stabilise and safely unload the affected containers. Following the unloading, the vessel’s mooring equipment, which was partly damaged, will undergo repairs.
