Containership Topples Gantry Crane


On January 8, a container ship reportedly toppled a gantry crane while maneuvering into the port.

What happened?

The container ship ‘Hansa Meersburg’ reportedly allided with a gantry crane upon its arrival at Keelung port.

The container ship was trying to maneuver towards its berth at the United Logistics Container Terminal upon its arrival from Xiamen.

Crane topples:

The container vessel reportedly toppled the gantry crane and the cargo it was handling to the ground. More than 50 containers were reported to have been damaged or destroyed due to the toppling.

Damage assessed:

The damaged berth crane belonged to Taiwan-based United Logistics International, which has five other identical cranes in service. The container ship suffered damages to its bow side and its stern was damaged.

The damages are currently being assessed by the company and are preparing to seek compensation from the containership owners. The East Pier 11 was also damaged, suffered a hole three meters wide and 2.8 meters deep.

One person injured:

A 62 year old, tally clerk suffered minor injuries during the crane incident. An emergency response team responded to the site and provided medical assistance. Fortunately, 22 crew members onboard the vessel were uninjured.

An investigation is currently underway by the Marine Port Bureau (MPB) under the Ministry of Transportation and Communications. The VDR was secured in this regard.
