Maersk, which contracted with Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering to build methanol-fueled ships last year, is anticipated to order more of such vessels, which cost more than 200 billion won each, says an article published in Business Korea.

Additional contract

A contract to build 12 methanol-fueled container ships with a TEU capacity of roughly 16,000 was signed last year.

For the additional contract, Maersk is in discussions with Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, and Samsung Heavy Industries.

Backlogs already full

“The new contract depends on when the new ships should be delivered,” said an industry source, adding, “The three shipbuilders’ backlogs are already full for two to three years and the delivery to Maersk is likely to be in 2025 or 2026.”

Contract is estimated

When the contract was signed last year, methanol-fueled ships cost an average of $175 million in the United States.

The cost of the new deal is projected to be US$183 million.

Similar to last year’s contract, the new one is most likely for 12 ships with four to six options.
