  • Kongsberg Maritime has been awarded contracts by Irving Shipbuilding Inc. to supply Fixed Built Propellers (FBP) for the Royal Canadian Navy’s River Class Destroyer program.
  • The deal includes twin propellers for the first three ships, with deliveries beginning in 2028 as part of Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy.
  • This builds on earlier contracts signed in 2023 for stabilisers, steering gear, rudders, and replenishment systems, with the full program expected to total 15 ships delivered into the 2040s.

Kongsberg Maritime has secured contracts with Irving Shipbuilding Inc. to deliver Fixed Built Propellers (FBP) for the River Class Destroyer (RCD) program, part of Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy. The program is designed to replace the Royal Canadian Navy’s Halifax-class fleet with 15 advanced warships over the coming decades.

Scope of supply

Under the contract, Kongsberg will provide twin Fixed Built Propellers for each of the first three vessels in the RCD program. Deliveries for these ships are scheduled to begin in 2028.

Björn ten Eicken, Vice President – Naval at Kongsberg Maritime, said:
“We have a proud history of supplying mission-critical technology to major naval programs worldwide, and we’re delighted to support Irving Shipbuilding and the Royal Canadian Navy on the River Class Destroyer project. The platform is highly capable and versatile, and we look forward to contributing our proven technology as propellers and other systems are installed.”

Long-term program

The RCD program aims to deliver 15 ships in total, with construction and deliveries continuing into the 2040s. The current contract covers only the first batch of three vessels, but provides a foundation for future supply opportunities as the program advances.

Previous contracts

In 2023, Kongsberg Maritime signed additional contracts with Irving Shipbuilding Inc. to provide a wide range of naval systems for the RCD program. These include non-retractable fin stabilisers, steering gear and rudders, replenishment at sea (RAS) moveable high point systems, and a comprehensive technical documentation package tailored to the requirements of both Irving Shipbuilding and the Royal Canadian Navy.
