COSCO has indeed introduced a new LNG dual-fuel car carrier named the Yuan Hai Kou, which notably features integrated solar panels. This vessel is capable of transporting 7,000 CEU (Car Equivalent Units), reports Safety4sea.

Dual Power

The Yuan Hai Kou, reportedly China’s largest ocean-going cargo ship powered by both solar energy and liquefied natural gas (LNG), commenced its maiden voyage from Nansha, Guangzhou, on May 21.

This innovative vessel is equipped with over 500 solar panels, which are capable of generating approximately 410,000 kWh of electricity annually. This solar power is sufficient to supply onboard lighting, communications, and other essential systems. This integrated solar energy system is projected to save about 111 tons of fuel and reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 345.9 tons per year.

Beyond its solar and LNG systems, the Yuan Hai Kou is also fitted with a medium-voltage shore power interface. This feature allows for low-emission operations while the vessel is at berth. The combination of these advanced technologies aims to reduce the vessel’s lifecycle carbon intensity by nearly 35% compared to conventional car carriers.
