COSCO Shipping has signed a deal to access green methanol, as the Chinese shipping giant seeks to decarbonise its fleet, reports Breakbulk.
Delivery of green methanol
The agreement, signed with a European partner, will see COSCO Shipping take delivery of green methanol produced from renewable sources. The company plans to use the fuel in its existing dual-fuel vessels.
The move comes as the shipping industry faces increasing pressure to reduce its carbon footprint. Green methanol is seen as a promising alternative fuel due to its lower emissions compared to traditional marine fuels.
COSCO Shipping is also exploring other decarbonisation strategies, including the use of wind-assisted propulsion and the development of hydrogen fuel cell technology.
