COSCO Shipping Specialised Carriers officially named its newest multipurpose pulp carrier, CSPC Pearl, during a ceremony in China.
The vessel is the third in a series built by COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry, and it showcases a blend of cargo versatility and modern safety innovations aimed at supporting global supply chain needs across a range of industries.
A Multipurpose Giant Ready for Global Trade
CSPC Pearl measures 225 meters in length, with a beam of 36 meters and a deadweight of 85,000 tonnes, enabling it to carry large volumes over 25,000 nautical miles. Although primarily designed for transporting wood pulp, the vessel’s cargo hold is engineered to accommodate various other loads—including offshore wind turbine components, steel bridge parts, rail vehicles, and electric vehicles (EVs). This makes it highly adaptable for both industrial and green energy cargo transport.
Smart Safety Features for Sensitive Cargo
Given the growing risks associated with EV battery transport, CSPC Pearl is fitted with a “one-to-one” temperature monitoring and early warning system. This technology allows the crew to closely monitor the temperature of each EV onboard, significantly reducing the risk of battery fires during transit. Complementing this is a water spray firefighting system installed in the cargo hold to address potential fire emergencies promptly and effectively.
The CSPC Pearl embodies COSCO Shipping’s commitment to cargo safety, technological advancement, and sustainable logistics solutions. As it prepares for its maiden commercial voyage to Egypt and Saudi Arabia, the vessel not only expands COSCO’s capabilities but also reinforces its role in supporting complex, global trade routes with safer, smarter, and more flexible shipping solutions.
