Green fleet development
On November 22, COSCO SHIPPING Energy inked a contract with Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd. and China Shipbuilding Trading for the construction of six 307,000-deadweight-ton (dwt) Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs). These state-of-the-art vessels come equipped with advanced energy-efficient designs, optimized for future fuel transitions. They are LNG Ready and Methanol Ready, ensuring adaptability for conversions to LNG and methanol propulsion during their construction phase.
Every detail of the new VLCCs has been fine-tuned, particularly in hull profiles, to enhance energy savings while maintaining cost efficiency. Their power-to-speed ratio reflects precise engineering aimed at minimizing environmental impact without sacrificing performance.
Meanwhile, COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers marked another milestone on November 20 by naming two colossal 77,000-dwt multipurpose pulp carriers: the GREEN PECEM and GREEN SUAPE. Unveiled at COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry in Dalian, these vessels are the world’s largest dedicated pulp transport ships, exemplifying the company’s commitment to energy-efficient shipping.
Measuring 225 meters in length, with a width of 32.26 meters and a molded depth of 21 meters, the ships feature a cruising speed of 15 knots and an extraordinary range of 25,000 nautical miles. They are built for versatility, with cargo holds designed in a container-like format and equipped with rotary dehumidifiers, ensuring optimal conditions for pulp shipments.
Their utility extends beyond pulp transport. The vessels can also carry high-speed rail equipment, wind turbines, new energy vehicles, and large machinery, including steel pipe pile structures. A standout innovation is their specialized temperature monitoring system, designed specifically for the safe and efficient transport of new energy vehicles. This one-to-one monitoring technology offers early warnings, ensuring cargo safety during long voyages.
These advancements underscore COSCO SHIPPING’s dedication to sustainability while meeting the evolving needs of global trade. With cutting-edge technology and designs tailored for diverse cargo, the company is charting a course for greener, smarter shipping.
