The owner of the cargo ship Eternity C, recently targeted and sunk by Yemen’s Houthi rebels in the Red Sea, has called for the immediate release of its detained crew members. This plea comes after the Houthis released video footage showing 11 rescued mariners, reigniting international concern over the safety of seafarers amid escalating maritime tensions linked to the Gaza conflict.
Crew Members Shown in Houthi Video After Deadly Attack
Following the attack on Eternity C, the Houthis released a video on Monday claiming to have rescued 11 people from the sinking vessel, including two injured crew and one deceased body. The incident marked a resurgence in Houthi attacks on commercial ships they allege are linked to Israel.
The European Union’s Operation Aspides later confirmed that 15 out of 25 crew members remained missing, with four presumed dead. Cosmoship, the ship’s Greek owner, expressed relief that some of the missing crew were alive but emphasized the urgent need for their safe return.
Philippines and International Community Call for Action
The situation has drawn global attention, especially as nine of the detained sailors are reportedly Filipino. The Philippine government announced its intent to seek help from “friendly countries” to negotiate their release.
This mirrors a previous incident in January when the Houthis released the mostly Filipino crew of the Galaxy Leader during a ceasefire in Gaza. Cosmoship reiterated its commitment to the crew’s well-being and called on all parties to aid in reuniting them with their families.
The sinking of Eternity C and the detention of its crew highlight the increasing risks faced by international shipping in conflict zones like the Red Sea. With global shipping companies and governments now involved, pressure is mounting on the Houthis to release the crew and de-escalate their maritime campaign. As humanitarian concerns grow, the international community continues to seek a peaceful resolution to safeguard both sailors and trade routes.
