During a Port State Control inspection at the Port of Baltimore, Marine Inspectors from Sector Maryland-National Capital Region (NCR) discovered counterfeit pilot ladders. The identification plate on the ladder displayed several errors, including an incorrect ISO standard reference (ISO 779-1 instead of ISO 799-1) and the absence of the required ISO 799-1 designation type, reports the US Coast Guard.
Recommendations Given
The Coast Guard strongly recommends that ship owners and operators:
- Thoroughly inspect pilot ladders to ensure vessels are equipped with genuine SOLAS-approved equipment.
- Verify certification details by checking for proper ISO approval numbers and ensuring they match the actual ladder specifications.
This will help ensure the safety and compliance of vessels and prevent the use of counterfeit equipment.
