Singapore, India, Thailand Report Covid Spike; WHO Urges Vigilance

Several Asian countries, including India, China, Singapore, and Thailand, are witnessing a renewed rise in Covid-19 cases, largely driven by new Omicron sub-variants. While most cases remain mild, authorities have issued advisories, increased surveillance, and reinforced healthcare systems to prepare for potential surges.

India: Mild Cases but Vigilance Intensifies

India recorded 1,009 active Covid-19 cases as of May 28, with Kerala (430), Maharashtra (209), and Delhi (104) accounting for the highest numbers. Karnataka reported 40 new cases, pushing its active caseload to 126 and registering a 10.12% positivity rate over the past 24 hours.

  • The ICMR confirmed that all current variants are Omicron sub-lineages, causing largely mild symptoms.

  • New sub-variants LF7 and NV181, identified in Tamil Nadu and Gujarat, have raised concerns about increased transmissibility.

  • Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao inspected KC General Hospital for preparedness, including oxygen supplies and ICU beds.

China: Surge Driven by XDV Variants

China’s CDC reported a positivity rate of 15.8% in early May, up from 6.3% in late March. In April alone, China saw over 168,000 cases, including 340 severe cases and nine deaths.

  • Dominant strains: XDV and XDV.1, known for stronger immune evasion.

  • Respiratory expert Zhong Nanshan advised older adults and vulnerable groups to take extra precautions.

  • A decline in cases is expected by late June.

Thailand: Spike Blamed on Songkran Festival

From January to mid-May, Thailand recorded 187,031 Covid-19 cases and at least 44 deaths.

  • Over 67,000 new cases were logged between May 18–24, with Bangkok reporting the highest numbers.

  • Authorities have expanded access to telemedicine, and distributed masks, test kits, and sanitisers through apps like SaluberMD and Mordee.

Singapore: Booster Shots and Mask Advisory

Singapore saw 14,200 new infections in early May, up from 11,100 the previous week. Although hospital admissions have risen slightly, they remain manageable.

    • The dominant strain is a descendant of the JN.1 variant.

    • The Health Ministry has recommended booster shots for high-risk groups and mask use in crowded places.

    • No Covid-related deaths have been reported in Singapore this year.

WHO Calls for Continued Vigilance

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported over 91,000 global Covid-19 cases in the 28 days up to May 11, with Thailand, Brazil, the UK, Greece, and France reporting the highest numbers. However, the tally excludes data from China and the US.

  • The WHO emphasized that although Covid-19 is now endemic in many regions, intermittent surges remain a risk and preparedness is essential.
