On April 17, a crane boom collapsed during loading operation sending four people crashing into the water.
What happened?
Two cranes ‘HEBO Lift 2’ and ‘Lastdrager 35’ belonging to steel company ‘Hollandia’ were involved in loading operations when the bridge section of the crane barge collapsed.
The impact of the crash sent four people including the crane operator crashing into the sea and they were subsequently rescued by the fire brigade. A couple of people who sustained injuries were treated by paramedics.
Rescue operation initiated
The port officials alerted the fire brigade who deployed divers and rescued the people from the water during a major relief operation.
A safety zone was established around the crash site, while attempts were made to stabilize the situation and to limit damage. The two involved barges had to be stabilized after the accident.
The sheeleeg was recently taken into use after an overhaul. As it now seemed, due to a technical defect the anchor point of the guiding wire has broken off.
Investigation launched
An extensive extensive will be conducted to determine the exact cause of the accident. The SZW Inspectorate will conduct an investigation. On Friday morning, the recovery of the debris commenced with the sheerleg “Matador 3”.
