On September 3, a freight vessel reportedly ran aground but lucky the crew members and cattle onboard the vessel remained unhurt.

What happened?

The freight vessel ‘Statesman’ ran aground near Stanley in Tasmania’s northwest.

The authorities received a report that the vessel reportedly run aground on a reef located off Stanley known as North Point. The vessel was carrying cattle and freight from Tasmania to King Island.

Minimal damage to the vessel:

During the incident, the vessel suffered minimal damages during the grounding. A tug was immediately despatched to the grounding site to offer assistance to the stricken vessel. The vessel had minimally damaged its rudders and propellers but no leakage was reported.

An eyewitness told, “It was lucky that the [Burnie-based] tugboat was prepared this morning, and it left as soon as the call went out. The weather changed for the worse within 30 minutes after the rescue, so the crew were very lucky”.

None injured:

Fortunately, the crew member nor the cattle onboard the vessel were injured during the incident.

A navigation issue resulted in the vessel veering off its course and striking the reef. The EPA said DPIPWE biosecurity officers had checked all cattle aboard, and that the animals seemed to be in good health. The officials have also initiated investigation to determine the cause of the incident. The vessel has been docked for further inspection and repairs.
