Crew Struck In Chest With Rope Dies Aboard

The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office has identified a man who died while recently working aboard a cargo ship on the Cooper River, reports the Berkeley Observer.

According to Chief Deputy Coroner Darnell Hartwell, his office was contacted Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2022, in reference to a victim that was pronounced dead at the North Charleston South Carolina Ports Terminal, which is located at 1000 Remount Road.

The victim has been identified as Jayson Nieto, 35, from the Philippines.

Hartwell said Nieto was on the ship, which was determined to be in Berkeley County, when he was working with a rope that struck him in the chest, in turn, causing him to go into cardiac arrest.

The Berkeley County Sherriff’s Office along with the South Carolina Ports Police, City of Charleston Marine Patrol, Charleston County EMS, United Sates Coast Guard, and the Charleston County Coroner’s Office all responded to the incident.

The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office along with the Charleston County Coroner’s Office and the Coast Guard are investigating.
