A Chinese bulk carrier crew member who fell overboard off the West Australian coast has been found alive.

Search by the authority

Police were first advised just after 6.30pm on Sunday that the vessel had anchored about 11.5km off the coast of Geraldton, in the state’s Mid West region, and the Chinese national was believed to have gone overboard.

A search co-ordinated by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, which involved the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre jet and marine rescue vessels, failed to locate him by the early hours of the morning.

Police said at the time the search would resume at first light.

About 8.40am on Monday, a search vessel found the man, aged in his 30s, in the water about 10km off the Oakajee Coast, or 24km northwest of the Geraldton coast.

“The man is being conveyed to shore and will be taken to hospital for a medical assessment,” police said in a statement.
