The recent release of several crew members from a detained vessel marks a significant development following a year of hardship and uncertainty. Their release occurred after substitute crew members were deployed to replace them onboard. The vessel was detained at an Indian port due to an alleged drug smuggling case, leading to the prolonged detention of the crew without formal charges.
Detention Following the Discovery of Illegal Substances
The vessel was seized approximately a year ago after arriving at an Indian port from Indonesia. A suspicious package attached to the vessel’s crane led to the discovery of around 22 kilograms of cocaine during investigations. Indian authorities detained both the ship and its crew for over a year as the case unfolded.
Despite the severity of the situation, no charges were filed against the detained crew members. However, the investigation has kept them onboard, unable to leave or communicate freely with their families due to the confiscation of their electronics and restricted movement.
Crew Hardships During Detention
The extended detention has taken a significant toll on the crew members’ physical and mental well-being. Reports highlight the challenges they faced, including isolation, limited communication with loved ones, and restricted freedoms. The distressing conditions were underscored by an incident where an onboard engineer, following an altercation, jumped off the ship in a possible suicide attempt. Fortunately, the individual was rescued.
Ongoing Investigation and Court Decision
Indian courts ordered the sale of the detained vessel, maintaining their decision despite appeals. The crew’s continued detention stems from the ongoing investigation into the drug smuggling allegations. Authorities have stated that the remaining crew members will be released.
