Polish authorities reported that pirates kidnapped a Polish-owned cargo vessel off Nigerian Coast. This incident is the first of its kind reported during the year.

The reports also confirm that the kidnapped sailors include shipping officers. This has made the ship impossible to navigate. The rest of the crew is safe on the ship.

The ship was anchored around 30 nautical miles (56 km) off the Nigerian coast, and the operator was arranging for a new crew to take it back to port. Nigerian authorities were not immediately available for comment.

Security experts class the waters off Nigeria as one of the deadliest on earth. Nigerian pirates often target ships and oil tankers. They kidnap hostages to claim ransom. But, there has been nos such incident for almost a year. Polish Maritime Minister Marek Grobarczyk said the safety procedures of all Polish companies operating in the area would be reviewed to ensure sailors’ safety.
