Crew welfare is a critical aspect of the maritime industry, encompassing the health, safety, and overall well-being of seafarers. This was the focus of a panel discussion at the 2024 Crew Welfare Week, moderated by Capt. Hari Subramaniam and featuring industry experts like Erik Green, Capt. Konstantinos G. Karavasilis, Kostas Katsoulieris, Nikolaos Koletsis, and Isabelle Rickmers.
Current Challenges
Nikolaos Koletsis highlighted the impact of physical and mental health crises on seafarers, exacerbated by long work hours, insufficient rest, and increased incidents of bullying and harassment. These issues, along with technological advancements and the need for crew reskilling, present significant challenges.
Focus on Psychological Safety
Erik Green emphasized the importance of psychological safety onboard, noting that it can be monitored and improved to create a safer environment for seafarers. Capt. Hari Subramaniam added that reducing the stigma around mental health is crucial for encouraging seafarers to express their concerns.
Shifting Perspectives and Opportunities
Isabelle Rickmers discussed the industry’s evolving view of crew members as valuable resources rather than costs. However, Capt. Konstantinos Karavasilis pointed out that many companies still prioritize profit over crew welfare. He advocated for better security provisions, such as pension plans and health insurance, to align seafarer benefits with those of shore-based employees.
