Crowley & Carbon Ridge Collaborate On Carbon Capture Pilot Project

214

Crowley and Carbon Ridge Inc., a leader in modular onboard carbon capture and storage solutions, have joined forces for an advanced pilot project supported by the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD).

The project aims to reduce emissions impacts using Crowley’s Storm international container ship, according to an article published on Crowley’s website.

Carbon Capture Technology

Carbon Ridge’s second-generation carbon capture technology, featuring a patent-pending design, will be tested in actual maritime environments at port and eventually at sea.

The pilot program includes the engineering, manufacturing, and integration of a smaller version of Carbon Ridge’s full-scale carbon capture system.

Potential Emissions Reduction

Chase Dwyer, CEO of Carbon Ridge, highlights the milestone in carbon capture technology, emphasizing its potential for significant emissions reductions. Ship owners and operators can future-proof their vessels for upcoming regulations and achieve decarbonization goals.

Crowley’s Role

Crowley’s engineering services group leads the integration of the pilot system on the Storm container ship, serving the U.S. and Caribbean Basin.

The carbon capture system will be housed in two 40-foot containers on the vessel’s main deck, with an additional 20-foot ISO-certified tank for storing captured liquid CO2. The project aims to capture 1 metric ton per day from the vessel’s main engine.

Commitment To Sustainability

Brett Bennett, SVP and General Manager of Crowley Logistics, expresses excitement about spearheading the maritime industry’s journey to cleaner operations. The project aligns with Crowley’s commitment to reaching net-zero emissions as part of its sustainability strategy.

MARAD’s Perspective

Daniel Yuska, Director of the MARAD Office of Environment and Innovation, emphasizes MARAD’s support for innovative technology applications that contribute to greenhouse gas emission reductions in the maritime sector.

Timeline

The installation of the pilot unit on the vessel is expected in 2024 after completing onshore testing.

Previous Collaboration

In 2022, Crowley contributed to Carbon Ridge’s seed funding round to support the continued development of the carbon capture technology.
