Who is Captain Kate McCue?

Captain Kate McCue made history as the first American woman to become captain of a mega cruise ship. Her journey began with an internship at Chiquita Brands International, working on their cargo ships. After gaining experience as a general deckhand in Hawaii, she secured an entry-level role with Disney Cruise Line after a nine-month wait. She joined Royal Caribbean in 2003, quickly progressing from second officer to first officer. Determined to achieve her dream of becoming a captain, Captain McCue pursued further education and earned her Chief Mate and Master’s License in 2009. By 2011, she had risen to the position of staff captain, the second-in-command role, within Royal Caribbean.

In 2015, Captain McCue made history as the first female commanding officer of a mega ship in the US, taking the helm of Celebrity Summit. Currently, she serves as the captain of Celebrity Beyond, the newest addition to Celebrity Cruises’ fleet and sister ship to Celebrity Edge. Captain McCue shares her captivating journey as a cruise ship captain on social media, where she has amassed a substantial following, including around 3.5 million TikTok followers and 8.6 million likes.
