Cruise Ship Repeats Its Record By Sailing Through 24m-Wide Passage

Fred Olsen’s cruise ship Braemar is set to repeat its record-breaking journey through the Corinth Canal and the latter which is just 24m wide at its narrowest point, says an article published in Mirror.

Past Records

The company made history in 2019 when Braemar broke the world record for being the largest ship ever to travel through the 6.4km long canal in Greece back in October 2019.

At the time it was such a tight squeeze that passengers onboard could reach out and touch the sides of the canal.

The Corinth Canal Sail

The Corinth Canal is a waterway that separates the Greek mainland from the Peloponnese, turning it into an island and is an important navigational route.

Now Braemar will once again traverse through the canal, sailing on a ‘Corinth Canal & Ancient Greece’ itinerary in April 2022. The cruise will sail from Southampton, with starting fares from £4,999pp for the 25-night cruise. Bookings will open from February 19 (Friday) on fredolsencruises.com.

Product Director’s Words

Clare Ward, Director of Product and Customer Service at Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, said: “We are proud of all of the cruises we handcraft for our guests, but this one is particularly special.”

“Our inaugural Corinth Canal sailing was just breathtaking. Guests took to the deck to watch in awe as Braemar travelled through the canal, with the sides so close they could almost reach out and touch them.”

“Captain Jozo Glavic, who navigated the canal, received a standing ovation from guests afterwards as he walked through the ship. It really was a very special cruise indeed. And now, even more guests will be able to experience it for themselves with the launch of this latest cruise.”

She adds that it’s not just the Corinth Canal which will be on offer for guests – other highlights will include the Acropolis of Athens, the Old Town of Rhodes, a visit to Katakolon (the birthplace of the Olympics) and the ruins of the Palace of Knossos in Crete.

Stopped Operations

At the time of writing, the Foreign Office continues to advise Brits against cruise ship travel during the pandemic. As a result a number of cruise lines have cancelled cruises or temporarily suspended operations.

Fred Olsen has currently paused its operations until the end of June 2021, and previously revealed that Braemar will not be operating until Spring 2022.
