Cruise Ship Rocks Violently in Drake Passage, Passengers React with Fear and Awe

12

Passengers aboard a cruise, experienced a frightening situation while traversing the notorious Drake Passage, a 600-mile stretch of water separating Antarctica from the southern tip of South America. During their return journey from the icy continent, the cruise ship encountered towering waves, estimated to be nearly 40 feet high, which crashed against the vessel, causing alarm among those onboard, reports Marine Insight.

Unpredictable Weather

The water body described is known for its unpredictable and severe weather conditions, characterized by rough seas and powerful waves. This is due to the convergence of waters from the Atlantic, Pacific, and Southern Oceans in that area.

Video footage captured the fear of passengers as massive waves caused the ship to rock violently, with scenes reminiscent of the movie “Poseidon Adventure.” Fortunately, unlike the film, the situation remained safe, and no lives were lost. As a precaution, passengers were instructed to stay in their cabins for the entire afternoon.

Passenger reactions varied significantly. Some embraced the experience as an extraordinary adventure, describing it as the trip of a lifetime. However, others, particularly those prone to seasickness, expressed their discomfort and distress on social media platforms like Instagram. Some passengers even vowed never to take another cruise, while a few drew comparisons to the ill-fated Titanic.
