  • CRYSTAL ODYSSEY, an LPG dual-fuel carrier owned by Kumiai Navigation, received top marks under the Zero-Emission Accelerating Ship Finance Program.
  • The vessel is equipped to reduce CO₂ emissions by around 15% and is designed to use ammonia fuel in the future.
  • Advanced emission control systems help the ship meet IMO Tier III NOx and SOx regulations.
  • The project reflects strong support from DBJ and ClassNK for maritime decarbonization initiatives.

Kumiai Navigation’s latest LPG dual-fuel carrier, CRYSTAL ODYSSEY, has been evaluated under the Zero-Emission Accelerating Ship Finance Program—an initiative led by the Development Bank of Japan (DBJ) and ClassNK. The program supports vessels advancing decarbonization in the maritime sector through a comprehensive scoring model and green financing. According to a report by ClassNK, the ship met high standards for environmental performance and innovation.

Kumiai Navigation’s LPG Vessel Rated ‘S’ for Environmental Excellence

The CRYSTAL ODYSSEY, owned by Singapore-based Japanese shipowner Kumiai Navigation, represents a key milestone in the industry’s shift toward decarbonization. Built by Kawasaki Heavy Industries at its Sakaide Works and delivered in June 2025, the vessel is equipped with dual-fuel technology that allows it to operate on LPG, which is expected to cut CO₂ emissions by roughly 15% compared to conventional fuel oil.

It is also prepared for future use of ammonia fuel, earning it the designation of an “ammonia-fuel-ready ship.” The ship features advanced emissions control systems, including exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR), to comply with IMO Tier III NOx limits. Additionally, its use of LPG ensures compliance with IMO SOx regulations, particularly in emission control areas.

These innovative features earned the vessel the top “S” rating from ClassNK, highlighting its exceptional environmental and technical performance. Through programs like this, DBJ and ClassNK aim to support maritime stakeholders in accelerating their transition to low-emission operations.
