CSM Launches “She Beyond” Initiative to Boost Women’s Representation at Sea

10

CSM has expanded its commitment to women in maritime with the launch of the “She Beyond” initiative, a programme created to strengthen support for women working at sea. The company brought female seafarers from across its global fleet to Manila for a full-day conference designed to encourage open dialogue, peer connection, and shared experience.

During the gathering, senior leadership highlighted the importance of recognising women’s contributions on board. They also emphasised the need to create a workplace culture where female seafarers feel respected, valued, and heard.

Building Community and Long-Term Support

“She Beyond” aims to move beyond awareness by building a long-term support structure for women pursuing maritime careers. The initiative introduces several focus areas:

  • Mentorship pathways that connect experienced officers with younger cadets.

  • Networking opportunities that help women form professional support circles at sea and on shore.

  • Career development tools that encourage leadership growth across departments.

Together, these elements strengthen confidence and provide a reliable framework for women navigating the challenges of life at sea.

A Cross-Fleet, Cross-Department Effort

The programme includes women from deck, engine and hotel departments, showing a clear effort to promote equal opportunity across ship operations. The conference sessions gave participants a space to share real on-board experiences, discuss operational challenges, and exchange practical solutions.

Because these discussions came directly from seafarers, they will guide the next steps of the initiative. The insights collected in Manila will help shape training, communication, and policy support across the wider fleet.

Encouraging a More Inclusive Maritime Workplace

The initiative reflects the growing need for structured inclusion efforts within the maritime sector. By focusing on mentorship, training support and peer networks, “She Beyond” works to create a stronger sense of belonging for women at sea. It also encourages leadership participation, helping female seafarers take on wider responsibilities across vessel operations.

As the programme expands, CSM aims to integrate these efforts into daily fleet culture, ensuring women continue to receive support throughout their careers.
