Singapore-based Marco Polo Marine and naval architect Seatech Solutions are to co-develop two specialised vessels for the offshore wind industry, both equipped with drones capable of delivering equipment to users offshore, says an article published on Riviera website.
Two specialised vessels for the offshore wind industry
The MP S80-20 service operation vessel (SOV) and S83-21 commissioning service operation vessel (CSOV) will be the first of their type designed in Asia, the companies believe.
In line environmental sustainability targets, the SOV and CSOV will also be constructed with a focus on energy efficiency. They will be fitted with a motion-compensated offshore access system with elevator towers and daughter craft to transfer windfarm personnel from the vessels to turbines.

They will also be fitted with skidding systems to move equipment on board and will have hybrid battery-based energy storage systems.
Equipment for launching, recovering and storing drones will be incorporated in the vessels’ design and workflow. Marco Polo Marine and F-drones Pte Ltd, another Singapore-based company that is developing large-scale autonomous drones, recently announced plans to develop electrically powered delivery drones for offshore windfarms.
“These vessel features will reduce fuel consumption and emissions by up to 15-20% compared with a non-diesel-electric hybrid vessel,” said Marco Polo Marine and Seatech Solutions.
The SOV and CSOV will be able to accommodate up to 60 and 110 people respectively and will be designed with a focus on safety and comfort. The vessels’ interiors will be designed with large windows for maximum daylight and particular attention has been paid to a clean and neat layout, giving rise to a modern user-centric workflow for wind turbine technicians.
Marco Polo Marine chief executive Sean Lee said, “It gives us great pleasure to unveil the co-development project for these first-of-their-kind, specialised vessels to support the offshore wind sector.”
