Current Ro-Pax Ferry Orderbook And Market Dynamics

86

Recently, the large ro-pax ferry order book (vessels above 30,000 gross tons) includes 17 ships, with 11 under construction in China and the remaining in Europe and Japan. The imminent deliveries of SAINT-MALO and GNV POLARIS will reduce this number, with no significant order surges expected in the near term.

Rising Costs and Limited Orders

Newbuild prices have surged due to heightened demand in the container ship sector, impacting the affordability and availability of slots for ro-pax ferries. Additionally, Chinese shipyards handling ro-pax ferries are now heavily involved in building Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTCs), adding pressure on both pricing and production schedules.

Limited New Projects in the Pipeline

Apart from a few anticipated new projects and the Grimaldi Group’s planned nine-ship order, experts at AXSRoRo forecast a stable but modest outlook for new large ro-pax orders in the short to medium term, due to escalating construction costs and limited capacity at major shipyards.
