Hacking Group Takes Credit

The hacking group known as ‘Lip-Dochtjan,’ which translates to The Sewn Lips, has stepped forward to claim responsibility for this breach. In a statement to Iran International, they announced that they successfully penetrated the National Iranian Oil Tanker Company and Iran Shipping Lines.

Effects on Tankers and Cargo Ships

The cyberattack specifically targeted 39 oil tankers and 25 cargo vessels. The hackers revealed that they gained access through Fannava, an Iranian company that specialises in satellite communications and data management services.

Disruption of Maritime Communications

By breaching the core Linux operating systems that power Iran’s maritime satellite networks, the group managed to disable Falcon, the main software used for communications. This led to widespread operational disruptions throughout the affected fleet.
