Daimler Truck, HHLA, And Kawasaki Partner To Develop Green Liquid Hydrogen Supply Chain

9

Daimler Truck AG, Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), and Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the Hydrogen Technology World Expo in Hamburg to explore the creation of a reliable and cost-effective supply chain for green liquid hydrogen through the Port of Hamburg to the European hinterland.

Advancing Hydrogen Logistics and Energy Transition

The partnership aims to facilitate the import of liquid hydrogen from producing countries to Germany, positioning Hamburg as a key hub for sustainable energy logistics. Over the coming months, the partners will analyze requirements for transshipment and onward transport by road and rail. They also plan to attract more companies and institutions to form a consortium spanning the entire hydrogen value chain.

Complementary Strengths for a Decarbonized Future

The collaboration underscores the strategic role of liquid hydrogen in Europe’s energy transition. Kawasaki brings decades of hydrogen infrastructure expertise, HHLA contributes its extensive logistics network, and Daimler Truck adds its leadership in hydrogen-powered transport technology.

Kawasaki is actively developing a global hydrogen supply chain, including commissioning liquid hydrogen (LH₂) carrier ships capable of transporting up to 160,000 m³ of LH₂ comparable to current LNG carriers. HHLA, targeting full climate neutrality by 2040, is integrating hydrogen import and fuel-cell technologies into port operations. Meanwhile, Daimler Truck’s dual-track decarbonization strategy includes both battery-electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles, with its GenH2 Truck prototype having already achieved a 1,047 km journey across Germany on a single tank of liquid hydrogen.

This tri-party collaboration marks a major step toward establishing Europe’s hydrogen economy. By combining logistics expertise, technological innovation, and sustainable energy ambitions, Daimler Truck, HHLA, and Kawasaki aim to lay the foundation for a scalable green hydrogen supply chain—strengthening Hamburg’s position as a central hub in Europe’s energy transition.
