Damen Partners with Square Port Shipyard to Strengthen Shipbuilding in India

On April 8, a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Square Port Shipyard and Damen Technical Cooperation B.V., marking the beginning of a transformative partnership in India’s maritime sector. The agreement was formalized at Square Port Shipyard, located 250 km south of Mumbai, and signifies Damen’s third major partnership in the Indian subcontinent, according to Damen Shipyards.

Strengthening Regional Shipbuilding for Global Reach

This partnership sets the stage for the development of Square Port Shipyard to build a variety of high-quality Damen-designed vessels, tailored to meet the demands of the regional market. The MoU outlines the mutual goal of leveraging Damen’s shipbuilding expertise and Square Port’s regional infrastructure to bolster India’s maritime capacity.

Dingeman van Woerden, Damen’s Regional Sales Director Asia, emphasized the strategic value of this collaboration:

“A physical presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing economies is critical for Damen Shipyards,” said Dingeman van Woerden, Damen’s Regional Sales Director Asia. “The availability of good infrastructure and economic labour costs will further strengthen our competitive edge in the global market. This partnership with Square Port Shipyard will enable us to bring our shipbuilding culture with its unique combination of quality and competitive prices to India’s maritime sector.”

Damen is globally renowned for its shipbuilding, maintenance, and conversion services. Through its Technical Cooperation programme, it supports shipyards worldwide to modernize and build vessels to rigorous international standards. By joining hands with Square Port Shipyard, Damen will contribute technological innovation and advanced methodologies to India’s domestic shipbuilding industry.

Mr. Fattesingh Patil, Director of Square Port Shipyards Pvt. Ltd., shared the company’s vision:

He also noted that adopting modern shipbuilding processes will help tackle existing capacity constraints in the Indian shipbuilding and repair sector.
